“I still can’t believe it,” Anya moaned. “This is a nightmare!”

I knew how she felt. Joe and I had been sitting in her trailer, basically watching her freak out, for the past hour.

I was feeling pretty freaked out myself. “I wish I’d spotted that loose netting sooner,” I mumbled for about the nine millionth time. “Maybe Barb would still be alive.”

Joe stepped over to the window and pulled back the curtain to peek out. “Yeah,” he said. “And half the news teams in the world wouldn’t be circling like sharks out there.”

“Poor Barb!” Anya sniffled, then shivered. “And it’s all my fault she’s dead. I’m sure that messed-up netting was meant for me. I was supposed to shoot my part first.”

She was probably right about that. But I wasn’t about to say so.

“If it makes you feel any better, you almost certainly wouldn’t have fallen to your death like she did,” I pointed out instead. “Since you’d just be floating and not doing all those flips and stuff, you wouldn’t have hit the net with that much velocity. So at worst you might’ve broken an arm when you hit the floor of the observation deck.”

She shot me a dismayed look and didn’t answer.

Oops. Guess it hadn’t made her feel any better.

“Smooth, bro,” Joe whispered. “Very smooth.”

There was a knock on the door. Moose stuck his head in.

“The limo’s here,” he told Anya.

She jumped to her feet and grabbed her purse. “Finally,” she said. “All I want to do is hide out in my hotel room. For about a year.”

Once they were gone, I pulled out my phone. “Who are you calling?” Joe asked.

“Jaan. I want to see if the cops figured out what happened to that safety netting.”

When Jaan answered, he sounded almost as shaky as Anya. “It just doesn’t make sense,” he told me. “The police have questioned everyone, and nobody knows what went wrong. The crew insists they double- and triple-checked that safety netting when they helped set up the wind tunnel this morning.”

“They’re sure?” I asked.

“Absolutely. I fear someone must have tampered with it between setup and filming.” Jaan sighed. “We left a couple of guards up there, of course, but perhaps . . .”

“Don’t worry, we’re working on some theories,” I told him.

“We are?” Joe asked as I hung up.

“At least this narrows things down,” I pointed out. I’d been thinking it through while watching Anya cry. “Only a limited number of people had access to the observation deck.”

“Yeah. The same three dozen people as usual.” Joe didn’t sound too impressed. “Maybe it’s time to have HQ run background info on the entire cast and crew.”

That reminded me of something. I pulled out my phone again.

“HQ sent us the info we wanted on Big Bobby,” I said.
